PUSHING TO THE FRONT
ing your passion means never having to work again in the traditional
sense. It makes work pleasurable, not work. Your passion can be anything,
from being the best bug killer (more on that in a moment), to
aspiring to be the world’s most innovative technology company, à la
Apple®. The key is the conviction that comes from being passionate
about what you do. It is important to be cognizant that passion may
come from many places. It could be something you are born with,
something that you were exposed to, or something that frustrated you
to the point that you were determined to do something better.
Passion from frustration? Absolutely. James Dyson became so frustrated
with weak vacuum cleaners that lost suction that he began trying
to create an incredibly strong vacuum that would never lose suction.
The power of this passionate frustration drove him for 5 years
– until he finally achieved the Dyson® vacuum that would turn into
a 6 billion dollar business! His estimated net worth is in excess of 2
billion dollars. Pretty frustrating indeed!
In 1984, I co-founded my first company, a commercial exterminating
company. Sure, being a bug killer might not excite a lot of people, (I
now find the vacuum cleaner to be quite exciting), however, out of
frustration we were determined to create a new kind of exterminating
company. We became even more determined after meeting with
industry icons including representatives from the industry’s National
Association; all of whom said what we wanted to do could not be
done. This added more fuel to our passion. We developed a guaranteed
pest elimination program for restaurants, hotels and other food
establishments. We quickly became a multi-million dollar company
operating in 8 states and servicing 3000 commercial properties in 20
business days of every month. In an industry where restaurants or
hotels would change exterminating companies every 11 months, our
average customer retention was 7.2 years! Our passion and reputation
caught the attention of a multi-billion dollar public British company
that purchased our business.
Passion is derived from the Latin word for suffering. This is a different
type of suffering than an injury or illness. The suffering of sacrificing
your time to realize your passion’s potential with all the setbacks that
go with it. Think about Michael Jordan’s endless basketball practicing,
the first one at practice and the last one to leave. James Dyson
