THE THREE “R’s” FOR SUCCESS
F. Kennedy committed this country to sending a man to the moon within
a decade when he took office in 1961. NASA created the Apollo
program to do just that.
But what you might not remember is that the first Apollo attempt ended
in disaster and tragedy. During a launch pad test launch on January 27,
1967, a cabin fire broke out – the Command Module was destroyed
and all three astronauts, Command Pilot Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Senior
Pilot Edward H. White, and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee, were killed on that
dark day.
That calamity resulted in a great deal of political pressure aimed at
killing the entire space program. Then-President Johnson, however,
invoked Kennedy’s legacy to relight the spark and provide the necessary
recommitment to keep the Apollo missions alive – and, as we all
know, two and a half years later, Apollo 11 successfully made the first
manned landing on the moon. One small step for a man – One giant
leap for mankind. Imagine if we had turned back from that incredible
accomplishment.
The Three R’s – responsibility, resilience and recommitment – combine
to help us complete the most difficult of journeys. And, as many
philosophers have told us over the years, the journey is more important
than the destination. How we conduct ourselves as we struggle to reach
our goals ultimately defines who we are and what we’re all about – and,
depending on how we create that definition, we find personal success
or failure. While you’re pushing to the front, don’t forget to make the
three “R’s” a vital part of your effort.
