I spent over 30 years in various leadership and management positions
in corporations and mid-sized companies and have had the pleasure
over the last few years to work with, study and conduct workshops for
hundreds of small business owners. It is due to these experiences that I
can, with credibility, say that the biggest issues we all deal with is not
the ideas, strategies and “how to’s”. It is the follow through or execution
of those Strategies, Tactics or Actions throughout the organization.
We all have documented processes for our employees so that we get
certain functional things done properly, but how many companies have
Process to manage the whole business?
Remember what Collins said – you really have to answer yes to just
three simple questions about your organization to make it great.
1. Do you have the Right People?
2. Do they know what the Right Things are to be doing?
3. Do they do those Things Right?
That is all well and good, but what if the answer to any of these questions
is no? How do you put in place a process to change for the better
and get “yeses” across the board?
I believe there are three keys to making this happen.
1. Clarity
2. Focus
3. Execution
So I began to focus on these 6 points and eventually developed a matrix
and then populated the matrix with the key points from the Strategic
Planning Process Document I implement with my clients. This is not
an event like traditional Strategic Plans with which we are so familiar.
You know, you go offsite and come up with binder full of Strategies
and Tactics and “#’s”, and then return to work the next week and the
dust builds up, as it sits on your desk waiting for someone to implement
some of it.
As Eisenhower said, “The planning is priceless, the plan is worthless.“
