WISdOm FOR PUSHING yOU TO THE FRONT
“But,” I shared, “Myra…the nurse said that my cervix is still closed.”
“So,” he retorted, “We’ll just go in and open it.”
“But isn’t there something I can do to save my baby’s life?” I pleaded
with the doctor. “Isn’t there some test…or…or something I can take to
show me whether my baby is still alive?” I asked.
He was leaning over me. The veins stood out on his neck as his face
was filled with annoyance, impatience and anger. As he leaned over,
his name badge hovered in front of me like a huge billboard, displaying
“Doctor, we’ve been married twelve years and are really wanting to
have this baby,” I said, hoping for some understanding and compassion.
The doctor did not want to hear my story. He abruptly answered, “You’ll
just have to start all over again,” he shot back. In frustration, he stalked
out of the room.
My husband and I held hands and prayed. He immediately said “This
is a decision that you have to make. It’s your body …and it’s your life
that’s on the line, Sweetheart.”
I was drawing on what I learned as a little girl that has always helped
me to “push to the front” regardless of how difficult or painful the situ-
