THE PASSION PRINCIPlE
after 5000 plus attempts to get his vacuum design right. The setbacks
propel us to continue, and make no mistake whatever the endeavor –
there will always be setbacks and challenges to overcome.
President Calvin Coolidge was quoted as saying: “Nothing in the
world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is
more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not;
unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world
is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved, and always will solve,
the problems of the human race.”
So how do we make passion work in our business?
• Spread Your Passion – It is contagious, a perfect example
is Pixar® and Apple®. Steve Jobs did not do it alone. His
passion became their passion, all working together for a
common goal to create something extraordinary. Shrek®,
Toy Story®, the iPhone®, enough said. Success fosters yet
more conviction and passion.
• Environment – Create an environment for your team to
excel. Remember they are not you and do not have the same
commitment and resolve as you do (yet). For this reason
you must take the time to create extraordinary systems for
ordinary people to thrive. One of the best examples of how
to accomplish this is Michael Gerber’s book series The
E-Myth®. People are inherently more committed when they
are thriving in their jobs.
• Commit to EverLearning – You have to stay ahead of the
game. For this reason alone you must be constantly refueling
your subconscious with new ideas. Set aside time each day
and commit to learning something new that may aid in the
execution of your vision. Passion without some control and
discipline can lead to disastrous results. Manage your time
wisely. One of the best books on time management is Eat
that Frog, 1 & 2 by Brian Tracy. Remember, business and
life are not static. You are either moving ahead or falling
behind in all areas of life; there is no “status quo.”
