school bus and all the kids moving away from me to leave a four or
five seat radius between them and the smelly kid wearing moccasins
and drinking goat milk. The other kids made me feel like I was worthless,
but the love and kindness of my family and a few close friends
got me through. All that being said, I treasure my childhood. Without
it, I would not be who I am today and who I am striving to become tomorrow.
So what happened? What changed for the poor kid that came
home crying four out of five days to the rich man that comes home
smiling every day?
I can remember my dad singing, “I don’t know but I’ve been told, Forest
Hamilton is as good as gold”. He sang it in that well known Army tune
with a smile in his voice. No matter how bad things were, those words always
made me feel better. I couldn’t help but feel, well... as good as gold.
The idea of gold as a standard for greatness in our culture is so pervasive
that many of us don’t even think about it. Just about everyone has longed
for a gold medal, a gold coin, a gold trophy, a gold ring, or a gold star
at some point in their life. Since before the times of The Bible, gold has
been a means of trade and it is still accepted in any country in the world
as currency. But what is the gold standard? As Webster’s defines it, “a
monetary standard under which the basic unit of currency is defined by a
stated quantity of gold.” Before 1933, every dollar bill could be traded in
for its equal weight in physical gold. While the argument persists whether
it would be sound monetary policy for The United States to return to
the gold standard, I can say with certainty that you should immediately
adopt and implement The Gold Standard of Life. These are the principles
that I have adopted and applied to my life to become successful, fulfilled,
and financially independent.
