PASSION ANd PURPOSE
Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres are two more shining examples. They educate
and entertain the world, bringing smiles to millions of faces.
Walt Disney’s contribution to the world lives on even larger now that
he is gone, as does Dr. Seuss’ creative genius, which has enriched the
lives of countless children, near and far. I also admire writers such as
Brian Tracy and Louise Hay, who use their craft to raise awareness. Another
favorite of mine is Jack Canfield, coauthor of the Chicken Soup
series. Is he rolling in the riches? Yes! Does he deserve to be? Yes! His
positive impact on humanity is massive.
Those are celebrity examples. While most people living their true purposes
may not make a global impact, there is tremendous good to be
found in small communities across the world. In our friendly coastal
town of Wilmington, North Carolina, the population is hardly more
than 100,000 people, yet we have more than 700 nonprofit organizations.
Our community is working for the greater good!
Higher callings may entertain, educate, enlighten, beautify, create, heal,
assist, encourage or teach. True purposes come in all shapes and sizes.
My father is a master woodworker. His perfectly turned wooden bowls
are exquisite objects of beauty, and they bring pleasure to those who
admire them. At this stage of his life, woodworking is both his passion
and his contribution.
My friend, local artist Pam Toll, is blessed with true God-given talent.
She paints breathtaking paintings and teaches art at our local university.
She co-owns ACME Studios, a building housing dozens of working
studios. She is cofounder of No Boundaries International Art Colony, a
nonprofit organization that brings a group of international artists together
yearly to make art for two weeks on nearby, beautiful Bald Head Island.
Pam uses her gifts and follows her passions, and in doing so, she has created
a life filled with creativity and interesting people.
Tracy Wilkes, another friend of mine, created a nononprofit organization
called Dreams, which provides art education to children in need.
Through Dreams, she has changed the lives of hundreds of local kids.
I had the privilege of teaching art at Dreams, and I experienced firsthand
the rewarding feeling that fills Tracy up on a daily basis.
