three teaching and research teams as visiting professors in
the 2022/23 academic year: Maarten Gielen and Gaspard
Geerts from Rotor DC in Brussels, Kerstin Müller, and Oliver
Seidel from Baubüro in situ and Zirkular in Basel and Zurich,
and Peter van Assche and Katja Hogenboom from Bureau
SLA in Amsterdam. They jointly represented the topic
area Sustainable Materials for a New Architectural
Practice — Entering a circular economy with novel
teaching and research approaches.
We were especially pleased to welcome scholars
from Ukraine: Dr. Nadiia Antonenko and Professor Dr.
Halyna Kohut, who conducted research at the Chair of International
Urbanism and History of Art, respectively.
We especially remember the award of an honorary
doctorate to Professor Dr. Barry Bergdoll in May 2022 for his
contributions to the field of architectural history. As a professor
of art history at Columbia University in New York, he
is considered one of the most renowned architectural historians
for the 19th and 20th centuries and was intensively involved
with the Karlsruhe building official and university
teacher Heinrich Hübsch as well as Friedrich Weinbrenner,
the co-founder of the Karlsruhe Polytechnic.
Likewise, the award of a Consolidator Grant
from the European Research Council to Professor Dr. Inge
Hinterwaldner was one of the outstanding events at our department
last year. She received a grant of up to two million
euros for the next five years.
There is also news to report about the yearbook itself:
for the first time, features can be found in the publication.
They take the place of the Discourse section, which previously
gathered contributions on a topic determined by the
yearbook editors. The features take up special events of the
documentation period and enable the authors to present
their projects in detail. Under the title Contacts, the feature
section of this yearbook primarily brings together contributions
dealing with forms of university exchange. A special focus
is on the aforementioned visiting professorships of the
Sto-Foundation. Their features open up a cross-border perspective
on the topic of circular economy in construction.
