Re-Construct Better!
Design Studio, Summer Term 2022
As architects, we cannot afford to continue demolishing
buildings. Still, sometimes, demolition is inevitable and
must take place. What potentials can we then inherit from
such a process? What aesthetics result from these design
principles?
In the summer term of 2022 the design studio of
Kerstin Müller and Oliver Seidel was cooperating with the
city of Karlsruhe in terms of a new project for a Betriebshof,
researching how integrating the city’s own material can feed
into a future design. It was about caring as much for the previous
life of the building as for the future one. The students
researched how to minimize the footprint, waste and costs of
the design through different strategies. The traditional design
process was expanded into a holistic one with all the
complexity a circular system implies.
Catalogue of re-used building components
But the projects didn’t start from scratch. The students
worked out a digital catalogue of re-used building components,
salvaged from the urban mine Anne-Frank-Schule
in Karlsruhe, which will be deconstructed in the next years.
Through an on-site building inspection, the components
were recorded, photographed and drawn. Afterwards, all information
was transferred into the catalogue, which formed
the basis for the design studio.
