The students, in small groups, set out on the roads of Germany
to meet these companies in order to find out more
about what it means to deal secondhand building materials.
This exhibition presents part of their findings, in particular
the numerous samples they collected. The results of their
research can also be found on the Sandbox page of Opalis
website (used for educational purpose).
Opalis is of course not the first directory of German
material dealers, the association Unternehmerverband
Historische Baustoffe, for example, has been doing an impressive,
similar work for over 30 years. Opalis helps to increase
the visibility of German dealers abroad, and also
lists profiles of young companies offering contemporary
materials.
Opalis aims at bridging the gap between second
hand dealers and commissioners, architects, and building
contractors. We believe knowing these dealers is crucial to
anybody interested in strategies of reuse. Thanks to their
expertise and services, they make salvaging building materials
easier to organize and less risky.
