The Architectural Space
The introduction to architecture takes place
in the field of building science in a fundamental
way. In the spirit of Dom Hans van der Laan’s architectural
teaching, we try to create an architectural
space between nature and ourselves with
the structural elements in order to guarantee human
existence in the world. A first approach to
architecture is made possible: from analysis, design
to construction. The knowledge is applied to
the design of a pavilion in the courtyard of the
Department of Architecture. This is developed on
the basis of a given use and the given material
and is built in the courtyard as part of the construction
week.
Studio House in
Karlsruhe
With the topic of the bachelor thesis in the
summer semester 2022, we will focus on the type
of studio house with the question of what role
this studio house can play in the 21st century for
the city and its inhabitants. The studio house itelf
serves as the basis for an examination of elementary
themes in architecture. By determining
a specific use (studio and living), a specific place
(Der Karlsruhe Westen) and a specific time
(2022), prototypical concepts require us to reflect.

How can we create urgently needed housing
in cities with an ever-increasing population
but limited area that allows for diverse forms of
life while remaining inclusive and affordable?
How can new housing be intertwined with existing
urban structures, thus counteracting urban
sprawl and protecting open spaces? This semester
we are looking for architectural answers to
these important questions.
Hotel in Lucerne
On the basis of current social and cultural
questions, the design task deals directly and directly
with the phenomena of urban spatial and
architectural design. What expectations do we
have today of the type of hotel as a place of accommodation
and food for travellers? The writer
Cees Noteboom writes, A hotel is a world of its
own, a limited territory, a cloister, a place that
you enter voluntarily. The guests are not staying
here by chance, they are members of an order.
Their room, poor or luxurious, is their cell.
Between Ideology
and Reality
In the course of the developed theses for
the transformation of large residential buildings
in regard to the current housing shortage and the
changing social needs, the Collini-Center in Mannheim
is now being analysed as an example. The
aim of the design is to use the potential of the vacant
office building as well as the vacant public
passage for the creation of new inner-city housing.

Utopia in Productive
Exile
The former prison island of Santo Stefano
in the Gulf of Naples. It was a time of its history,
a place of exile. From early settlements as places
of exile in Roman antiquity to the construction of
a prison complex in the 18th century. Already in
the original type of the one island this aspect is
thoughtfully designed and is continued in the
construction of the prison. Against this background,
the aspect of isolation of a new function
as an artist community should offer a positive
added value.
