The Corona pandemic gave the concept of the
home office an unexpected boost. But what does
working at home mean for our living environment
and living space? Often, cutbacks in private
living functions are the result.
In the literature, the topic of home office is
mostly treated only from the perspective of labor
law and workplace ergonomics. Planning
solutions are often only found at the level of
furnishings in the form of configurable furniture.
At the level of living typologies, suitable ideas
and specifications have been lacking up to now.
The question pursued in the design is which
integration concepts between the places home
and office can be developed for a post-pandemic
scenario?
The task of the design is to rethink and
further develop existing standards and typologies
within the framework of an analysis-based
design process. In addition to the aspects of
workplace ergonomics and occupational safety,
architectural psychological concepts were also
examined. For this purpose, the design was
divided into two successive work steps: In the
first part, the basics and framework conditions of
the home office from the point of view of work
science as well as living psychology were worked
through in the context of presentations and,
building on this, the resulting requirements were
identified (joint workshop) as well as design
principles derived and typologies developed.
These were then implemented and evaluated in
the design of concrete residential buildings.
that can be opened in both directions, allowing
for view relationships and passageways.
The student shows in a mobile special
solution an approach that allows temporary
work outdoors, e.g. in the park, and is especially
feasible for groups with limited space at home
and also without large investments, such as
students. This handcart can be purchased as a
complete package and placed in a location of
your choice. This total package includes
everything to be able to work self-sufficiently,
whether in individual, team or group work.
The design addresses a concrete example
for the implementation of HomeOffice on a neighborhood
level. The findings from the analyses of
the neighborhood types, the existing buildings
and the functions find a translation in the
elaboration. In the analysis, the focus was on the
neighborhood close to the city in a rural area. A
southern area of Rheinstetten- Forchheim was
chosen as the implementation site for the
concrete HomeOffice design.
The concept developed to combine
different living functions was applied to the floor
plan of a modern 3-room apartment in the
Sihlbogen Areal B residential development in
Zurich by Dachtler und Partner Architekten. The
apartment features an open-plan living area
where kitchen, dining and living are located in
one room. The conversion of the apartment
provides that upon entering the apartment, one
directly enters an expansive hallway that
provides a visual axis to a socializing area where
one meets with friends to cook, eat and talk
together. The home office is placed as a box
between the relaxing and socializing areas. It
serves as a kind of configurable threshold
between private and semi-public areas and can
be configured by sliding elements and windows
