Rooftiles
Roof tiles, made of fired clay, have been produced in Europe
since the 19th century in various design forms. They have
a long durability, which is why used ones are reinstalled even
after 200 years. They differ in shape, color, composition and
joint depending on age, region and place of production. In
Germany, depending on the region, it is mainly the traditional
variants, such as the Hohlpfanne in the north or
the Biberschwanz in south-eastern Germany, that can be
found at resellers of used products. When installed, these
older, used roof tiles do not differ much from the current
models, since the basic shape has changed only slightly.
Unlike modern, machine-made roof tiles, most hand-formed
tiles do not have a rabbet. They are fastened by nailing or
hooking the nose into the battens. Overlapping the individual
roof tiles provides additional support and allows for a
weatherproof surface. The deconstruction and reuse of tiles
is very easy. This is due to the, still applied, loose connection
of individual tiles. Often, a careful deconstruction before
the demolition of the dilapidated substructure is difficult, so
that high costs can arise due to securing measures. The replacement
of individual roof tiles is also made more difficult
by the differences in shape and composition depending on
age, region and place of production. Due to the certain deconstruction
conditions and the strongly limited compatibility
of the different roof tiles, the distribution of individual
tiles is difficult. Therefore, most resellers stock entire sets
of roofing tiles.
