AVIDITY OF CELLULOSE RESIN FOR VIRULENT (MAHONEY) AND<br />

ATTENUATED (LSc, 2ab) STRAIN OF TYPE 1 <strong>POLIO</strong>V<strong>IRUS</strong><br />

DR. HODES (presenting the paper): The work<br />

which I am about to describe came about as a<br />

result of studies we were making with radioactive<br />

poliovirus. We had grown polioviruses<br />

in the presence of radioactive phosphorus. In<br />

attempting to separate the virus from other materials,<br />

we made use of cellulose resin columns.<br />

The one we finally came to use was the diethylaminoethyl<br />

cellulose resin ion-exchange column<br />

which had been used by Hoyer and his associates.<br />

In working with the viruses it became clear<br />

that the manner in which the viruses were eluted<br />

from this column was quite regular and quite<br />

reproducible.<br />

This gave us the idea that perhaps the pattern<br />

of elution of a virus strain from the DEAE<br />

column was a constant characteristic, and that<br />

if this were so, we might have a physical marker<br />

which could conceivably be correlated with<br />

neurovirulence or lack of it.<br />

We showed very soon that the Type 1 Mahoney<br />

strain came off the column in a very regular<br />

and reproducible way. We obtained from<br />

Dr. Sabin a number of attenuated strains.<br />

The first one we worked with was the LSc,<br />
