1960: Jânio Quadro is elected president, but resigns after seven months, plungingthe country into crisis. He is succeeded by his left-wing vice-president João Goulart,whose constitutional powers are curtailed following fears by the military of hispopulist policies.1964: Military coup, supported by the CIA, deposing Goulart.
