PLENARY SESSION 2: METHODOLOGICAL CHALLENGES FOR ANIMAL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS 8 th Int. Conference on
LCA in the
Agri-Food Sector, 1-4 Oct 2012
beer) for the beer processing stage, whereas feed companies preferred economic allocation (resulting in low
emissions per unit of brewer’s grain). This stresses the importance of development of science-based harmonisation
of guidelines, which is a challenge is itself.
4. Conclusion
Current decisions on GHG mitigation in animal production are hindered by the complexity and uncertainty
of the combined effect of GHG mitigation options on climate change and their relation with other aspects of
sustainability. There is an urgent need to develop science-based tools that integrate socio-economic and environmental
impacts along the chain to gain insight into the multidimensional and sometimes conflicting consequences
of GHG mitigation options.
