These approaches lead to different results <strong>in</strong> the assessment with potentially dramatic effects <strong>in</strong> comparative<br />

studies if one uses different m<strong>et</strong>hods of impact assessment. Similar consideration can be made when evaluat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

impacts from fertilisation. In this aspect two approaches are usually applied: the use of a dispersion<br />

model or a nutrient balance <strong>in</strong> which impacts of distribution are related to the effects <strong>in</strong> the environment of<br />

the surplus nutrient (Milà I Canals <strong>et</strong> al., 2006). This second approach requires specific agronomic <strong>in</strong>vestigations<br />

about the nutrient need<strong>in</strong>g of the plants and the nutrient content <strong>in</strong> the soil of the orchard.<br />

Furthermore, the use of different functional units may result <strong>in</strong> deviat<strong>in</strong>g results. The reviewed literature<br />

shows that simple mass based functional units is not always able to capture the complexity of orchard systems.<br />

Thus, us<strong>in</strong>g comb<strong>in</strong>ed functional units or other functional units may be necessary. For example, impacts<br />

per land units may be used tog<strong>et</strong>her with mass based functional unit <strong>in</strong> order to compl<strong>et</strong>e results and<br />

avoid resource use efficiency overvaluation and delocalisation of environmental impacts.<br />

Started with this critical review, the ma<strong>in</strong> objective of the Work<strong>in</strong>g Group on Fruit <strong>LCA</strong> will be the elaboration<br />

of a framework m<strong>et</strong>hodology and specific guidel<strong>in</strong>es to improve <strong>LCA</strong> analysis on orchard cultivation<br />

and fruit products.<br />
