5. Conclusion<br />

Impacts on soil quality should be taken <strong>in</strong>to account <strong>in</strong>to a life cycle perspective because of the essential<br />

role of soils <strong>in</strong> ecosystem function<strong>in</strong>g. We have developed a framework for quantify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators of impact<br />

on soil quality, valid for all soil and climate conditions, and consider<strong>in</strong>g both on-site and off-site agricultural<br />

soils. These <strong>in</strong>dicators can be used <strong>in</strong> <strong>LCA</strong>s of bio-based materials or the waste-management stage when<br />

consider<strong>in</strong>g compost<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The first <strong>in</strong>dicators developed represent the most prevalent threats on soil: erosion, SOM change and<br />

compaction. Overall impact estimates result from the comb<strong>in</strong>ation of soil, climate, and management characteristics.<br />

Results to date can beg<strong>in</strong> to fill a database of soil-quality impact <strong>in</strong>dicators for crops and crop-based<br />

products from a several regions. Most of the <strong>in</strong>put data necessary for establish<strong>in</strong>g the LCI are common to the<br />

three midpo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>dicators and can be found <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g databases.<br />

The framework allows for <strong>in</strong>cremental improvement of the m<strong>et</strong>hod through the <strong>in</strong>clusion of new soilquality<br />

impacts. Improvement efforts will focus first on develop<strong>in</strong>g robust impact <strong>in</strong>dicators for <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

soil processes before consider<strong>in</strong>g wh<strong>et</strong>her to aggregate them <strong>in</strong>to a s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>in</strong>dicator. Non<strong>et</strong>heless, a vari<strong>et</strong>y of<br />

aggregation approaches can be explored (Garrigues <strong>et</strong> al., <strong>2012</strong>).<br />
