5. Conclusion<br />

A life-cycle approach tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to consideration all life-cycle steps can identify the ma<strong>in</strong> sources of emissions<br />

and elim<strong>in</strong>ate certa<strong>in</strong> preconceived ideas concern<strong>in</strong>g the relative significance of transport, packag<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

processes, or concern<strong>in</strong>g the compared impact of <strong>in</strong>gredients obta<strong>in</strong>ed from organic farm<strong>in</strong>g. The present<br />

studied displayed the power of <strong>LCA</strong> to improve bus<strong>in</strong>ess management. Besides the knowledge of the carbon<br />

footpr<strong>in</strong>t of its country-style pâtés, along with the ma<strong>in</strong> sources of emissions, Hénaff was empowered by this<br />

study to make educated decisions about the company’s susta<strong>in</strong>ability agenda and how to implement it when<br />

design<strong>in</strong>g new products. Hénaff can also use the attributes discovered <strong>in</strong> the study, like the fact that the emissions<br />

per 100g of pâté are lower than <strong>in</strong>ternational benchmarks, for mark<strong>et</strong><strong>in</strong>g purposes, <strong>in</strong> particular for<br />

foreign sales of its top-of-the-l<strong>in</strong>e products. F<strong>in</strong>ally, Hénaff can now use this precise consumption data per<br />

unit of product, delivered <strong>in</strong> the Carbonostics results, which could be leveraged to optimize its manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

processes.<br />

The study also raised <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>et</strong>hodological po<strong>in</strong>ts that should be addressed by the <strong>LCA</strong> community.<br />

The dramatic changes <strong>in</strong> conclusions depend<strong>in</strong>g on the functional unit chosen are one example, as is the importance<br />

of the impact allocation procedure. For food products, environmental aspects should never be covered<br />

separately from nutrition. A comb<strong>in</strong>ed analysis of carbon-related and nutritional aspects provides more<br />

extensive and reliable <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />
