(WSI) (Pfister at al., 2009). Most of the <strong>in</strong>put data were primary data, obta<strong>in</strong>ed from the Italian company<br />

records.<br />

3. Results<br />

3.1. Goals and scope of study<br />

The goals of this water footpr<strong>in</strong>t study were to quantify:<br />

1. the water footpr<strong>in</strong>t account<strong>in</strong>g of two alternative strawberry farm<strong>in</strong>g (non-organic and organic).<br />

The strawberries are produced <strong>in</strong> one site <strong>in</strong> Bulgaria owned by the Italian company that produces<br />

the jam. Primary data of the plant<strong>in</strong>g and harvest<strong>in</strong>g period were collected.<br />

2. the direct and <strong>in</strong>direct water footpr<strong>in</strong>t of a 330g organic strawberry Jam produced by the Italian<br />

company. A cradle to gate perspective was adopted, consider<strong>in</strong>g all the processes and materials<br />

that contribute to the production of the product. Secondary distribution, use and end of life were<br />

excluded.<br />

The water footpr<strong>in</strong>t account<strong>in</strong>g of the alternative farm<strong>in</strong>g is expressed <strong>in</strong> l/kg of strawberries.<br />

The functional unit used to represent the product water footpr<strong>in</strong>t is 330g of organic strawberry jam sold <strong>in</strong><br />

Italy. Data used <strong>in</strong> the study refers to a 15 months period b<strong>et</strong>ween 2009 and 2010: from strawberry plantation<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>al product primary distribution. The Italian company owns and manages the farm<strong>in</strong>g site <strong>in</strong> Bulgaria<br />

and the production and distribution sites <strong>in</strong> Italy. Table 1 reports the ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 1 kg of<br />

organic strawberry jam.<br />
