3.2 Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Although not presented here, the characterised global warm<strong>in</strong>g potential impact results (i.e. climate<br />

change) are benchmarked with available <strong>in</strong>ternational and national research <strong>in</strong> each PC<strong>LCA</strong>. The global<br />

warm<strong>in</strong>g potential impacts were consistently comparable with the other studies. This is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

the underly<strong>in</strong>g LCI data to a significant degree was adapted from the benchmark studies, as described <strong>in</strong> the<br />

paper. Only with <strong>in</strong>digenous data from <strong>in</strong>dustry can we develop a more confident product profile appropriate<br />

for Chile.<br />

4. Discussion<br />

The objective of identify<strong>in</strong>g and reduc<strong>in</strong>g environmental impacts, and not merely transferr<strong>in</strong>g impacts<br />

across media or stages of the product life cycle, is best served by consider<strong>in</strong>g the whole product life cycle<br />

when s<strong>et</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g product environmental criteria. That said, we cannot l<strong>et</strong> lack of data or m<strong>et</strong>hods hold back progress.<br />

The spirit <strong>in</strong> which the work was progressed was to take a pragmatic and practical approach to overcome<br />

gaps, and to provide a start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t for improvement, rather than hold back <strong>in</strong> the absence of confirmed<br />

models and data. In this spirit the team developed provisional normalisation and weight<strong>in</strong>g factors <strong>in</strong><br />

order to help <strong>in</strong>terpr<strong>et</strong> the results. The assessments rely on unconfirmed characterisation models for regional<br />

impacts <strong>in</strong> Chile and the background data was adapted from almost exclusively non-South American process<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

An anticipated concern for the Chilean <strong>in</strong>dustry and stakeholders is that life cycle data and product characteristics<br />

are used correctly and appropriately <strong>in</strong> communication and use. This especially <strong>in</strong>cludes any tools,<br />

m<strong>et</strong>hods, ecoprofiles and ecolabels that draw from the participat<strong>in</strong>g companies’ data. For this reason, a regional<br />

hub of TSC is be<strong>in</strong>g established to provide appropriate regional adaptations and stakeholder engagement.<br />

The r<strong>et</strong>ailer and Chilean government are also fund<strong>in</strong>g targ<strong>et</strong>ed producer <strong>in</strong>itiatives to catalyse the use<br />

of <strong>LCA</strong>-based tools and m<strong>et</strong>hods by r<strong>et</strong>ail suppliers.<br />

It is the authors’ view that the goal should <strong>in</strong>clude a wide consensus on a consistent level play<strong>in</strong>g field<br />

m<strong>et</strong>hodology. Consistency specifically <strong>in</strong> terms of LCI and allocation but also LCIA, is crucial to enable a<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gful comparison b<strong>et</strong>ween products. Solv<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>et</strong>hodological problems to encompass the breadth of<br />

issues for products sold <strong>in</strong> r<strong>et</strong>ail stores must provide an approach that is similarly consistent and applicable<br />

across a large range of sectors. This is also important <strong>in</strong> order to avoid the possible mis<strong>in</strong>terpr<strong>et</strong>ation or even<br />

misuse of the results themselves.<br />

5. Conclusion<br />

The <strong>LCA</strong> reported here has shed light on what the ma<strong>in</strong> environmental hotspots <strong>in</strong> the life cycle are. A<br />

consistent and level play<strong>in</strong>g field m<strong>et</strong>hodology and active engagement from Chilean stakeholders must be<br />

established for the food sector <strong>in</strong> order for <strong>LCA</strong> to provide mean<strong>in</strong>gful and reliable <strong>in</strong>put <strong>in</strong>to decisionmak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
