To be transparent, the m<strong>et</strong>hodology used is described giv<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>et</strong>ails about the environmental <strong>in</strong>dicators<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itions and the hypotheses used <strong>in</strong> this study (Figure 5).<br />

4. Conclusion<br />

In the French environmental experimentation context, the communication of <strong>LCA</strong> results to the general<br />

public is one of the ma<strong>in</strong> challenges of this <strong>in</strong>itiative. The Nescafé® <strong>LCA</strong> Communication Tool is an example<br />

of user-friendly <strong>in</strong>teractive solution that allows consumers to analyse for themselves the results per life cycle<br />

stage and per <strong>in</strong>dicator. The ma<strong>in</strong> advantages of this k<strong>in</strong>d of communication are the limited amount of <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

on display at a time, allow<strong>in</strong>g analysis of complex results of an <strong>LCA</strong> <strong>in</strong> a simple and engag<strong>in</strong>g way,<br />

as well as creat<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>teractivity which attracts the attention of the user. The “Grenelle de<br />

l’Environnement” <strong>in</strong>itiative is a multi-<strong>in</strong>dicator approach which allows coverage of a wider range of environmental<br />

impacts (e.g. it is not only focused on carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t). A multi-<strong>in</strong>dicator approach results <strong>in</strong> a<br />

communication challenge. The idea to show a limited amount of <strong>in</strong>formation on display at a time is a good<br />

option to overcome this challenge.<br />

While it is clear that consumers are still becom<strong>in</strong>g familiar with a life cycle assessment approach to understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environmental impacts, this k<strong>in</strong>d of solution can be a valuable start <strong>in</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g from scientific<br />

report based results to more engag<strong>in</strong>g consumer communication.<br />
