nally expected. Taking into consideration the sample
size of N=61 pairs of peer and self ratings, this
relationship surely deserves replication in an independent
sample.
The three TMMS-24 subscales showed positive
correlations, however, only to a moderate degree.
As all scales were characterized by high reliabilities,
this pattern seems to indicate that the three
components assessed are related but separable. It is
worthy to note that Clarity showed a moderate relationship
with both Attention and Repair (r=.25,
each). But Attention and Repair were virtually unrelated
on the level of scale scores. Scale inter-correlations
were comparable with those found in the
original Spanish version of the TMMS-24 (Fernández-Berrocal
et al., 2004). Remarkably, also in the
Spanish sample, moderate positive correlations were
only found for Clarity with the other two components
(r=.18 and r=.35 with Attention and Repair,
respectively), whereas Attention and Repair were
not related. This replicated pattern of relationships
can be reconciled with the special role of Clarity as
a mediator linking Attention and Repair as specified
by cognitive process accounts of EI. The communality
of the Clarity component with the other subfactors
also indicates its core position in the EI
framework from a psychometric perspective.
To investigate the underlying structure of
the TMMS-24, all 24 individual items were entered
a principal components analysis. First, a one-factor
solution was specified along with the theoretical
postulate of a “g”-factor of emotional intelligence
that should account for variance in all items. The
factor was found to explain 25.4 percent of the total
variance. Substantial loadings were obtained for
a majority of items (median loading .53, range
.19–.72). Especially Attention and Clarity items
helped identify the factor.
