4 ο Πανελλήνιο Συνέδριο Ψηφιοποίησης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς

EUROMED 2021, 30/9 - 3/10/2021

in Palataki Tower in Haidari and hosted in the hostel of the estate, in the well-known N. Gyzis building, the

painters N. Gyzis and N. Lytras (Drosinis, 1953). In 1862, Nikolaos Nazos asked the painter to decorate the

interior of the dining room of the hostel and there N. Gyzis creates one of his first works, which is also the

subject of this study.

On the four walls of this ground floor, the painter has painted the four seasons of the year, one on each wall,

giving each one separately, the form of a young girl (Michailidis, 1911).

The understudy work of art is a fresco. The whole composition is a railing shade. Roses climb on the columns,

the grapevine spreads and flowers touch. The composition is completed by birds that sing and butterflies that

play (Michailidis,1911). On each wall, in the center of the composition, spring, summer, autumn and winter

are portrayed in the form of a young girl. It is noteworthy that the artist has rendered some trees in blue while

the rest in dark green. We assume that in these points the preliminary draft has remained, which was probably

done in blue as this phenomenon was observed in other parts of the project. Another hypothesis is that, perhaps,

the artist wanted to state that these objects are in the background, at a great distance.

A few years after the creation of the work, the composition with the personification of Winter was destroyed

to open a skylight in its place. Also, already, a few years later, the whole project was in poor condition due to

humidity. Today the lower parts of the mural have been significantly altered while in some parts chromatic

restoration has been done.

The work is characterized by the fine and gentle line, the wonderful aesthetics of this great artist and, from a

technical point of view, the way he treats light (Michailidis, 1911).
