OP-III-36simultaneous occurrence of a reagent evaporation and its vapor-phase hydrogenation. Theexistence of dry pellets in the operating trickle bed reactor has been also revealed. They aresupplied with a liquid reagent by the mechanism of capillary absorption of a liquid phasefrom the adjoining pellets which are filled with a liquid (Fig. 1). The partially wetted catalystpellets can be hypothetically responsible for the occurrence of hot spots in the trickle bedreactor. In this work MRI has been also successfully applied to the in situ study of a transport ofdifferent components of an impregnation solution in the support pellet in the course of thesupported catalyst preparation. For these purposes the influence of paramagnetic/diamagneticspecies on the T 1 /T 2 relaxation times of solvent protons as well as the possibility to detect theNMR signal of a metal atom itself if this metal atom is in a diamagnetic state has been used[6]. Solid state MRI and multinuclear MRI have been used to map the distribution of an activecomponent and impurities in the support pellet in a solid phase after drying of the pellet afterthe impregnation procedure.MRI has been also applied for a comprehensive characterization of the transportphenomena in bioreactors over different scales.AcknowledgementsThis work was supported by the grants from RFBR (05-03-32472), CRDF (RU-C1-2581-NO-04; RUP1-2667-NO-05), the Global Energy Foundation.
