4 LEAVE4.7.6 FULL TIME LEAVE WITHOUT PAY4.7.6.1 Recognition <strong>of</strong> ServiceAs leave without pay is a form <strong>of</strong> leave there is no break in the continuity <strong>of</strong><strong>employment</strong> with the <strong>Department</strong>. However, periods <strong>of</strong> full time leave without pay donot count as “service” with the <strong>Department</strong> for entitlements to other forms <strong>of</strong> leave<strong>and</strong> salary benefits except in the circumstances outlined below. Part time leavewithout pay may also affect these entitlements <strong>and</strong> is outlined in Section 4.7.7 Parttime Leave Without Pay. See Section 4.7.8 for a summary <strong>of</strong> the effects <strong>of</strong> leavewithout pay on entitlements4.7.6.2 Short Term AbsencesLeave without pay which, when aggregated, does not exceed five days (or onemonth in the case <strong>of</strong> sick leave accrual) in a period <strong>of</strong> twelve months, is to count asservice for all leave <strong>and</strong> incremental salary progression. See Section 4.6.8 for asummary <strong>of</strong> other effects <strong>of</strong> leave without pay on entitlements.4.7.6.3 Long Term AbsencesLeave without pay which, when aggregated, does not exceed one month is to countas service for accrual <strong>of</strong> sick leave. Leave without pay which, when aggregated,does not exceed six months is to count as service for calculating extended leaveonly. They do not count for other forms <strong>of</strong> leave or incremental salary progression,unless the salary progression is based on the person's age.Application <strong>of</strong> this provision particularly affects those staff who have taken periods <strong>of</strong>leave without pay <strong>of</strong> up to six months within the first ten years <strong>of</strong> service. In thiscase, the period <strong>of</strong> leave without pay will count as service for extended leavepurposes once the staff member has completed at least ten years actual service.4.7.7 PART TIME LEAVE WITHOUT PAY4.7.7.1 ApplicationAs leave without pay is a form <strong>of</strong> leave, it may be granted for a minimum amount <strong>of</strong> aquarter day, as is the case for other forms <strong>of</strong> leave. The amount <strong>of</strong> leave does notalter the basis for granting the leave (refer Section 4.6.1 General).4.7.7.2 Recognition <strong>of</strong> ServicePart time leave without pay does not break the continuity <strong>of</strong> service with the<strong>Department</strong>. However, periods <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay do not count as servicewith the <strong>Department</strong> for entitlements to other forms <strong>of</strong> leave <strong>and</strong> salary benefits,except in the circumstances outlined below.The effect <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay depends on whether the staff member takesa short or long period <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay.Part time leave without pay <strong>of</strong> up to one term or three months will be treated in terms<strong>of</strong> Section 4.7.7.3, Short Term Absences.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 39
