4 LEAVE4.13 STUDY ASSISTANCE4.13.1 GENERALStudy assistance only applies to school administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff. Other non-teachingstaff in schools should read Section 4.14 Study Time <strong>and</strong> Study Leave.Study assistance is available to develop the skills <strong>and</strong> versatility <strong>of</strong> School administrative<strong>and</strong> support staff (SAS staff). It should be equitably accessible to all eligible staff <strong>and</strong> shouldbe used to promote a highly trained <strong>and</strong> skilled workforce responsive to the requirements <strong>of</strong><strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training.The purpose <strong>of</strong> study assistance is to assist SAS staff to undertake approved study which isrelevant to their pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> value to the <strong>Department</strong>.Study assistance is granted at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong>. (See sections 4.13.2.3 <strong>and</strong>4.3.3).Study assistance may be approved for a maximum period <strong>of</strong> three hours per week, includingtravel.4.13.2 STUDY ASSISTANCE4.13.2.1 SAS staff studying on a part-time basisStudy assistance may be granted at full pay to staff members who are studying on apart time basis. It is not to be granted to a staff member to attend a course organisedessentially for full time students or which, in later stages, requires full timeattendance.4.13.2.2 EligibilityAll permanent <strong>and</strong> long term temporary SAS staff are eligible to apply.4.13.2.3 <strong>Department</strong>al convenienceThe approval <strong>of</strong> study assistance will be at departmental convenience, withconsideration <strong>of</strong> such factors as:a) proposed absences;b) combination <strong>of</strong> study assistance with other types <strong>of</strong> leave; <strong>and</strong>c) maintenance <strong>of</strong> service at the school.4.13.2.4 Use <strong>of</strong> study assistanceStudy assistance may be used for:a) attending compulsory lectures or tutorials, where these are held during workhours; <strong>and</strong>/orb) necessary travel during working hours to attend lectures or tutorials etc, heldduring or outside working hours; <strong>and</strong>/orH<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 69
