4 LEAVE4.2.3 ADOPTION LEAVE4.2.3.1 Entitlement and Paymenta) The paid and/or unpaid adoption leave entitlements of eligible staff members areoutlined in the table below:Staff category Entitlements Service requirements foreligibilityAll permanent and long termtemporary staff members whowill be the primary caregiver ofan adopted child.Basic entitlementUnpaid adoption leave – 52weeks unpaid leave from thedate of taking custody of thechild. May be taken as full timeand or part time leave providingthe total amount of leave doesnot exceed the equivalent of 12months full time leave.No service requirement.Long term temporary staffmembers may only accesspaid adoption leave within aperiod of a temporaryengagement.Paid adoption leave – 14weeks full pay or 28 weeks halfpay, or one combination of fullpay and half pay. May be paidin a lump sum or in normalfortnightly pay.Paid leave reduces the amountof unpaid leave available.At least 40 weeks’ continuousservice prior to the date oftaking custody.All permanent staff memberswho have been grantedadoption leave.All long term temporary staffmembers who have beengranted adoption leave mayonly access the additionaloptions within a period oftemporary engagement.Additional entitlementsRight to request additionaloptions:Extend the period ofunpaid adoption leavefor an additional periodnot exceeding 12months;No service requirement.Return from a period ofadoption leave on apart time basis until thechild reaches schoolage.Handbook for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 5
