4 LEAVESection 4.11.8; orc) the Director-General is in doubt as to whether or not the condition is one thatwould properly give rise to a grant <strong>of</strong> sick leave;the medical certificate shall be referred to the Director <strong>of</strong> HealthQuest (who is alsothe Government Medical Officer) to determine suitability for sick leave purposes.The nature <strong>of</strong> the leave to be granted to the staff member in respect <strong>of</strong> theapplication shall be determined by the Director-General on the advice <strong>of</strong> the Director<strong>of</strong> HealthQuest.If sick leave is not granted the Director-General must, as far as practicable, take intoaccount the wishes <strong>of</strong> the staff member when determining the nature <strong>of</strong> the leave tobe granted.4.11.7 ATTENDANCE FOR TREATMENT4.11.7.1 GeneralSick leave shall be granted to cover attendance at treatments ONLY when theDirector-General is satisfied that an appointment could not be obtained outsidenormal working hours <strong>and</strong> that the treatment was urgently needed. Sick leave shallbe granted in non-urgent cases only where it was not possible to obtain anappointment outside normal working hours.4.11.7.2 Special CasesOn production <strong>of</strong> satisfactory evidence <strong>of</strong> need <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> attendance, staff members areto be granted sick leave to attend legitimate therapy, training, counselling orrehabilitation, for example for adjustment to a disability, injury or accident; alcohol oranother drug or gambling dependency; post-traumatic shock; <strong>and</strong> comparable<strong>conditions</strong> for which such assistance is appropriate.4.11.7.3 Periodic TreatmentWhere a staff member has a medical condition that requires periodic treatment <strong>of</strong>short duration (e.g. physiotherapy), all consequential absences shall be aggregatedfor the purpose <strong>of</strong> debiting against leave credits.4.11.8 CONFIDENTIALITY OF ILLNESS4.11.8.1 GeneralA staff member wishing the nature <strong>of</strong> illness to remain confidential, need not recordthe nature <strong>of</strong> illness on the sick leave application form.4.11.8.2 Medical Certificate Not RequiredThe staff member must give a personal explanation to the principal or some otherperson at a similar supervisory level, who will certify on the application form that thegranting <strong>of</strong> sick leave is appropriate in the circumstances. In such circumstances,every attempt shall be made to ensure that the person to whom the explanation isgiven is <strong>of</strong> the same sex as the staff member, if the staff member so wishes.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 54
