4 LEAVEa weekend for a similar period.4.12.10 MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES ATTRACTING SPECIAL LEAVE4.12.10.1 First Aid CoursesStaff members attending courses conducted to train or retrain first aid <strong>of</strong>ficers inorder to meet <strong>Department</strong> needs during the normal span <strong>of</strong> hours will be regarded asbeing on duty. In such cases the cost <strong>of</strong> the course may be met from <strong>Department</strong>alfunds provided that the staff member is nominated by the <strong>Department</strong> to attend thecourse.4.12.10.2 Blood DonorsStaff members may be granted special leave to give blood, with such leave beingrestricted to the time reasonably necessary.4.12.10.3 Retirement Preparation SeminarsStaff members invited to attend retirement preparation seminars conducted by theSuperannuation Administration Corporation, may be granted two days special leave,with no other concessions.4.12.10.4 Olympic <strong>and</strong> Commonwealth GamesStaff members who are selected as competitors or <strong>of</strong>ficials at the Commonwealth orOlympic Games may be granted up to four weeks special leave to enable them toparticipate in the Games. The same concessions may be applied to competitors or<strong>of</strong>ficials taking part in the equivalent games for the disabled.4.12.10.5 National Aborigines <strong>and</strong> Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>er DayStaff members who identify as an Aborigine or a Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>er may begranted up to one day special leave per year so that they may participate in NationalDay celebrations.4.12.10.6 Bone Marrow DonorsStaff members who are listed in the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Register <strong>and</strong> whoare called on to donate, may be granted up to five days special leave.The grant is subject to the production <strong>of</strong> a medical certificate from a registeredmedical practitioner covering any absence.4.12.10.7 Returning Officers Appointed by the State Electoral OfficeA returning staff member undertaking electoral duties for an election or a by-electionmay be granted special leave for the period from four weeks before the polling day orthe issue <strong>of</strong> the writ, whichever is the longer, until three weeks after polling day. Ifrequired by the Electoral Commissioner, further leave may be granted by theDirector-General.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 67
