4 LEAVEPart time leave without pay <strong>of</strong> greater than one term or three months will be treatedin terms <strong>of</strong> Section 4.7.7.4, Long Term Absences.4.7.7.3 Short Term AbsencesAn absence is defined as short term when staff members take part time leave withoutpay over a period <strong>of</strong> up to one term or three months.Part time leave without pay which when aggregated does not exceed five days pay ina period <strong>of</strong> twelve months is to count as service. Therefore, it is to be recognised forall leave <strong>and</strong> for incremental salary progression.If the period <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay does not exceed one month, accrual <strong>of</strong>sick leave is unaffected.Aggregated periods <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay <strong>of</strong> more than six months do notcount as service for the purposes <strong>of</strong> extended leave.Aggregated periods <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay <strong>of</strong> up to six months can berecognised for extended leave purposes if ten years service has been completed.If periods <strong>of</strong> part time leave without pay <strong>of</strong> up to six months are taken in the first tenyears <strong>of</strong> service, only the time worked is counted as service for the accrual <strong>of</strong>extended leave. However, once ten years net service is completed, all periods <strong>of</strong>part time leave without pay <strong>of</strong> up to six months are counted as service for extendedleave.4.7.7.4 Long Term AbsencesAn absence is defined as long term when staff members take part time leave withoutpay over a period <strong>of</strong> more than one term or three months.Staff on long term absences will receive pro rata entitlements for all forms <strong>of</strong> leave.If applicable, increments continue to be paid on an annual basis for staff on long termabsences.4.7.7.5 Resumption <strong>of</strong> DutyStaff previously on long term absences need to complete a full substantive workingweek <strong>of</strong> <strong>employment</strong> to be considered to have returned to full time <strong>employment</strong>.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 40
