9 SUPERANNUATIONPillar is not advised <strong>of</strong> "prescribed leave" <strong>and</strong> members have two options for payment<strong>of</strong> contributions:Option (a)The member can apply to Pillar on the grounds <strong>of</strong> financial hardship, to reduce theirpersonal contributions to as low as 0% for a limited period. The election must besubmitted within three months <strong>of</strong> the member:• being advised <strong>of</strong> the amount <strong>of</strong> arrears owing for the period <strong>of</strong> leave without pay;or• starting on workers compensation payments (providing the payments are lessthan the member’s normal salary).If the application is approved for 0%, the contributions are not payable, the perioddoes not count as service <strong>and</strong> benefit points do not accrue.Option (b)The member pays their normal personal contributions, for the whole period, at therate that applied before he or she started the leave without pay, to the <strong>Department</strong>.The member does not have to pay the employer contributions to the <strong>Department</strong>, <strong>and</strong>the period <strong>of</strong> leave counts for benefit point accrual <strong>and</strong> the employer-financed benefit.Additional benefit cover contributions (if they apply) continue to be charged to themember’s account.The member pays their personal contributions to the <strong>Department</strong> in a lump sum inadvance, in regular fortnightly payments in advance, or in regular fortnightly paymentsduring the period <strong>of</strong> leave.9.3.3.2 Full-time Leave Without PayWhole calendar months <strong>of</strong> full-time leave without pay do not count as contributoryservice. Personal contributions are not paid <strong>and</strong> no employer-financed benefitaccrues. The member continues to pay full contributions for part months <strong>and</strong> theemployer-financed benefit accrues.Generally, leave without pay <strong>of</strong> more than five continuous days does not count forservice for the calculation <strong>of</strong> the basic benefit.9.3.4 SASS CONTRIBUTIONS FOR MEMBERS ON PART-TIME LEAVE WITHOUT PAY ORCHANGED WORK ARRANGEMENTSThe amount <strong>of</strong> personal contribution is adjusted on the basis <strong>of</strong> the new salary if a memberchanges:• from permanent full-time to part-time work;• from permanent part-time to full-time work;• permanent part-time hours worked;• takes part-time leave without pay, including part-time parental leave without pay <strong>and</strong> studyleave without pay (more than five days full-time equivalent).H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools Page 9 − 5
