4 LEAVE4.11 SICK LEAVE4.11.1 GENERALStaff members unable to perform their duties because <strong>of</strong> illness may be granted sick leave onfull or no pay, dependent on the amount <strong>of</strong> sick leave to credit.A staff member who is absent on a long period <strong>of</strong> sick leave or who has a limited sick leaveentitlement should ensure that a leave application complete with doctor's certificate is submittedpromptly. Where the absence is ongoing, leave applications <strong>and</strong> doctor's certificates should besubmitted on a regular basis.4.11.2 ENTITLEMENTS4.11.2.1 GeneralAll staff members employed on a full time basis, on <strong>and</strong> from 1 May 1988, are eligibleto be granted fifteen working days paid sick leave per calendar year – i.e. 1 Januaryto 31 December. Sick leave does not accrue on a monthly basis <strong>and</strong> the full annualentitlement is available from 1 January each year, provided the staff member enterson duty in that year.The unused component <strong>of</strong> the annual entitlement is fully cumulative.Part time staff receive pro rata entitlements.Short term temporary or casual staff are not eligible for sick leave.4.11.2.2 Former EntitlementsStaff members who commenced <strong>employment</strong> prior to 1 May 1988 <strong>and</strong> who had anentitlement under the former cumulative scale as at 30 April 1988, shall retain suchentitlement for use, if necessary in future years. For details please refer to Section6.18 <strong>of</strong> the Personnel H<strong>and</strong>book.4.11.2.3 Former ServiceFor the purposes <strong>of</strong> determining the cumulative sick leave entitlement under Sections4.11.2.1 <strong>and</strong> 4.11.2.2, former service shall be recognised as follows:i) all prior permanent <strong>employment</strong> under the <strong>Education</strong> (School Administrative <strong>and</strong>Support Staff) Act, Public Sector Employment <strong>and</strong> Management Act 2002, PublicSector Management Act 1988 <strong>and</strong> the Public Service Acts <strong>of</strong> 1902 <strong>and</strong> 1979.;ii) all prior full time or part time service as a temporary staff member under the<strong>Education</strong> (School Administrative <strong>and</strong> Support Staff) Act 1987, Public SectorEmployment <strong>and</strong> Management Act 2002, Public Sector Management Act 1988 orthe Public Service Acts <strong>of</strong> 1902 <strong>and</strong> 1979 provided the service is for a period(s)<strong>of</strong> greater than one term (three months).H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 49
