4 LEAVE4.14.2.25 Study Time Granted for the Whole CourseIn some circumstances, it may be more appropriate to grant an amount <strong>of</strong> study timefor the whole course, which can then be taken according to the needs <strong>of</strong> the staffmember <strong>and</strong> <strong>Department</strong>al convenience. In such cases, the average yearly studytime taken should not be more than ten days if taken in accordance with Section4.14.2.24 a) or twenty days if taken in accordance with Section 4.14.2.24 b).4.14.2.26 The Application ProcessStaff members who wish to apply for study time should formally apply through theirprincipal to the Employee Services Bathurst as early as possible. Where study timehas been granted, staff members should give reasonable notice <strong>of</strong> the program foreach year or semester <strong>and</strong> their proposed pattern <strong>of</strong> leave. This will allow anynegotiations to be completed before the academic year or semester begins.4.14.3 NON ACCEPTANCE OF STUDY TIME APPLICATIONSWhere the <strong>Department</strong> does not approve an application for study time, the <strong>Department</strong> willensure that:a) timely advice is given to allow the staff member to consider alternatives;b) counselling is available to assist the staff member to consider alternatives; <strong>and</strong>c) the reasons for refusal are clearly <strong>and</strong> promptly provided, in writing, to the staff member.4.14.4 EXAMINATION LEAVE4.14.4.1 Special LeaveExamination leave may be granted by the Director-General as special leave. It isavailable for courses <strong>of</strong> study (either face-to-face courses or correspondencecourses) approved under these guidelines.4.14.4.2 EntitlementThe period granted is to include:a) time actually involved in the examination; <strong>and</strong>b) necessary travelling time,but is to be limited:c) to a maximum <strong>of</strong> five days in any one year; <strong>and</strong>d) is not available where an examination is conducted within the normal classtimetable during the term or semester <strong>and</strong> study time has been granted to thec<strong>and</strong>idate.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 77
