4 LEAVEd) use <strong>of</strong> other forms <strong>of</strong> leave to <strong>of</strong>fset the additional time where making it up isimpractical.4.13.2.10 Non m<strong>and</strong>atory class attendanceWhere class attendance is not a m<strong>and</strong>atory component <strong>of</strong> course completion, (egexternal distance modes <strong>of</strong> study) study assistance is approved only for theduration <strong>of</strong> the course term/semester time <strong>and</strong> excludes any holiday or studybreak periods.4.13.2.11 Study assistance not taken at the nominated timeStudy assistance is an expendable grant which if not used for the nominatedcourse is lost. If an emergency situation occurs, a person may have to give uptheir normal study assistance. If circumstances allow, however, such time may begranted on another day during the same week. Such requests for variation shouldbe discussed with the school principal.Study assistance does not accrue during any other form <strong>of</strong> leave.4.13.3 APPLYING FOR STUDY ASSISTANCE4.13.3.1 The application processSAS staff will be invited to apply for study assistance twice yearly. Applicationsmust be received prior to the advertised closing date.SAS staff who wish to apply for study assistance should complete the appropriateform http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/adminsupport/train<strong>and</strong>dev/index.php <strong>and</strong>seek the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the principal prior to forwarding their application forconsideration by the <strong>Department</strong>.Where study assistance has been granted, the SAS staff member should give theschool reasonable notice <strong>of</strong> the program for each year/semester <strong>and</strong> theirproposed pattern for use <strong>of</strong> the study assistance.4.13.3.2 Non approval <strong>of</strong> study assistance application4.13.4 RELIEFWhere the <strong>Department</strong> does not approve an application for study assistance, the<strong>Department</strong> will ensure that:a) the reason/s for refusal is/are clearly <strong>and</strong> promptly stated, in writing to theSAS staff member;b) timely advice is given to allow the SAS staff member to consider alternatives;<strong>and</strong>c) advice is available to assist the SAS staff member to consider alternativesthrough their school principal or the Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Learning <strong>and</strong> LeadershipDevelopment Directorate.Relief will be provided by the school in blocks <strong>of</strong> two or more hours where study assistanceH<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 71
