2 STAFF WELFARE AND SUPPORT SERVICES2.3.3 ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY PRINCIPAL AND KEY PERSONNELThe following guidelines along with any specific procedures in the school=s Serious IncidentManagement Plan should be used by the school when a serious incident has occurred.The successful management <strong>of</strong> serious incidents depends on the taking <strong>of</strong> appropriate action <strong>and</strong>providing support during <strong>and</strong> after the incident.ImmediatelyΧΧassess the situation; <strong>and</strong>ensure safety <strong>and</strong> welfare <strong>of</strong> staff <strong>and</strong> students <strong>and</strong> arrange first aid if needed.During the first 24 hoursΧΧset up a recovery area;notify the district superintendent;Χ ring the <strong>Department</strong>=s State Office on (02) 9561 1216 in the event <strong>of</strong> an urgent seriousincident;Χ notify the WorkCover Authority where the serious incident has caused death or seriouspersonal injury to a person at the school;ΧΧΧΧΧΧwhere appropriate, ensure the equipment <strong>and</strong> area where the serious incident has taken placeis not further disturbed;organise debriefing <strong>and</strong> notify the time <strong>and</strong> place <strong>of</strong> the debriefing to all relevant persons;arrange counselling as needed;work with the media;keep staff, students <strong>and</strong> parents informed; <strong>and</strong>complete <strong>and</strong> forward a Serious Incident Report to the district superintendent.Within 24 - 72 hoursΧΧΧΧΧprovide opportunities for staff <strong>and</strong> students to talk about the incident with counsellors;provide support to staff <strong>and</strong> helpers;debrief all relevant persons;restore normal functioning <strong>and</strong> service delivery; <strong>and</strong>keep parents informed.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools Page 2 - 5
