1 GENERAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT1.1 EMPLOYMENT AND CLASSIFICATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE ANDSUPPORT STAFF1.1.1 EMPLOYMENTSchool administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff are employed under the provisions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Education</strong>(School Administrative <strong>and</strong> Support Staff) Act 1987. Staff employed under the <strong>Education</strong> (SchoolAdministrative <strong>and</strong> Support Staff) Act 1987 are:a) permanent staff members i.e. those persons appointed by the Director-General on apermanent basis as members <strong>of</strong> the school administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training in any classification (Section 8, <strong>Education</strong> (School Administrative<strong>and</strong> Support Staff) Act 1987); orb) temporary staff members i.e. those persons appointed by the Director-General on a temporarybasis as members <strong>of</strong> the school administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training in any classification (Section 21, <strong>Education</strong> (School Administrative <strong>and</strong>Support Staff) Act 1987).1.1.2 PERMANENT APPOINTMENT1.1.2.1 Appointment on ProbationEvery person appointed as a permanent staff member shall be appointed on probation.1.1.2.2 Length <strong>of</strong> ProbationThe period <strong>of</strong> appointment on probation shall be twelve months from the date <strong>of</strong> entry onduty.In situations where the known ability <strong>and</strong> reputation <strong>of</strong> the person are such that the fullperiod <strong>of</strong> probation need not be served, approval may be given for the period <strong>of</strong> probationto be reduced. The minimum period <strong>of</strong> probationary service which must be served is sixmonths.The maximum period <strong>of</strong> probationary service is two years. The period for which a personis appointed on probation shall not be in excess <strong>of</strong> two years, except with theconcurrence <strong>of</strong> the Minister.1.1.2.3 Eligibility for Permanent AppointmentTo be eligible for permanent appointment, a person must be appointed to a schooladministrative <strong>and</strong> support staff classification within the range <strong>of</strong> 0.1 full time equivalent(FTE) to 1.0 FTE.A person is not eligible to be appointed as a permanent staff member unless the person:a) is an Australian citizen; orb) has the status <strong>of</strong> a permanent resident in Australia.A permanent staff member who is not an Australian citizen <strong>and</strong> who ceases to satisfy therequirements for permanent residency status is not eligible to continue in <strong>employment</strong> asH<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools January 2009 Page 1 - 1
