2 SUPPORT SERVICES2.1 HEALTH AND SAFETY SUPPORT SERVICES2.1.1 INTRODUCTIONThe <strong>Department</strong> is committed to developing a positive climate in workplaces, enhancing staffmorale <strong>and</strong> promoting harmonious working relationships that are conducive to effective <strong>and</strong> safeteaching, working, <strong>and</strong> learning.To meet this commitment, the <strong>Department</strong> has introduced important initiatives aimed at ensuringthe wellbeing <strong>of</strong> staff in <strong>Department</strong>al workplaces. These initiatives include the creation <strong>of</strong> theOccupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Directorate, the appointment <strong>of</strong> regional Occupational Health <strong>and</strong>Safety (OHS) teams, the provision <strong>of</strong> an Employee Assistance Program to eligible staff <strong>and</strong> training<strong>and</strong> development courses aimed at assisting in the personal <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>of</strong> staff.To ensure that all <strong>Department</strong>al staff receive appropriate support, the Occupational Health <strong>and</strong>Safety Directorate periodically reviews its health <strong>and</strong> safety policies <strong>and</strong> procedures.Information about health <strong>and</strong> safety is provided on the <strong>Department</strong>’s Occupational Health <strong>and</strong>Safety Directorate website. The site can be accessed through the Intranet, by clicking on theOccupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety link under the A-Z <strong>of</strong> Directorates, or by going to the followingaddress:http://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/admin<strong>and</strong>manage/oh<strong>and</strong>s/index.htmStaff may also contact the Team Leader, Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety (OHS) Strategy <strong>and</strong>Policy on (02) 9266 8958 for further information.2.1.2 PROVISION OF SUPPORT SERVICESIn each region an OHS team is available to support staff regarding issues relating to safety, health<strong>and</strong> wellbeing. In addition the <strong>Department</strong> produces publications on a range <strong>of</strong> health <strong>and</strong> supportissues <strong>and</strong> an Employee Assistance Program is available to eligible staff (see section 2.2 forfurther details).2.1.3 HOW TO OBTAIN SUPPORTInitially, staff should speak with their workplace manager regarding health <strong>and</strong> safety issues.Employees may also wish to contact regional OHS staff regarding workers compensation, health<strong>and</strong> safety issues.The regional OHS teams can provide information <strong>and</strong> assistance to staff regarding work-relatedhealth <strong>and</strong> safety issues. They can provide information <strong>and</strong> assistance regarding the followingissues:• advice on conflict prevention <strong>and</strong> resolution procedures for all staff in the area;• mediation support or referral to mediation services to assist in the resolution <strong>of</strong> conflict;• advice <strong>and</strong> support to staff on <strong>Department</strong>al policies <strong>and</strong> procedures for occupational health<strong>and</strong> safety <strong>and</strong> risk management;• co-ordination <strong>of</strong> rehabilitation programs to achieve an early return to work for staff who have aninjury or illness, which includes liaison with treatment providers, the fund manager <strong>and</strong>appropriate <strong>Department</strong>al staff; <strong>and</strong>H<strong>and</strong>book for Non Teaching Staff in Schools (August 2008) Page 2 <strong>of</strong> 4
