9 SUPERANNUATION9.5 SALARY SACRIFICE TO SUPERANNUATION9.5.1 INTRODUCTIONSalary sacrifice to superannuation is the option <strong>of</strong> making additional superannuation contributions<strong>of</strong> up to 100% <strong>of</strong> superannuable salary from gross or pre-tax dollars.9.5.2 ELIGIBILITYPermanent, temporary <strong>and</strong> casual, non teaching staff in schools are eligible to participate in thescheme for salary sacrifice to superannuation.9.5.3 PROFESSIONAL ADVICEThe information in this section provides a summary <strong>of</strong> issues only <strong>and</strong> should not be relied on as asubstitute for pr<strong>of</strong>essional or other advice. Additional contributions, once made, will <strong>general</strong>ly beunavailable (locked away) until retirement. This is a significant decision. Staff members areencouraged to treat salary sacrifice as seriously as other significant financial matters.9.5.4 SALARY SACRIFICE SCHEME REQUIREMENTS9.5.4.1 For the purposes <strong>of</strong> superannuation legislation, the sacrificed amount is deemed to beadditional employer contributions <strong>and</strong> may be paid either into First State Super, or withthe <strong>Department</strong>’s agreement, into one alternative complying superannuation scheme.9.5.4.2 The sacrificed amount transmitted to the superannuation fund by the <strong>Department</strong> will beshown on a staff member’s statement. However, the staff member will be responsiblefor taking any action necessary if the receiving fund indicates a discrepancy or shortfall,in the same way that the staff member has responsibility for ensuring any post-taxdeduction is being made correctly.9.5.4.3 Where a shortfall in the amount <strong>of</strong> pay for an individual occurs because <strong>of</strong> leave withoutpay (or for any other cause), the salary sacrifice deduction for superannuation will bestopped <strong>and</strong> will not be forwarded to the fund, <strong>and</strong> the staff member will be paid theremaining net pay. The staff member will be responsible for ensuring any shortfall incontributions, if one occurs, is forwarded to the superannuation fund.9.5.4.4 If the fund selected is not First State Super, the staff member must supply, with theapplication for salary sacrifice, the superannuation fund compliance number, ABN,address <strong>and</strong> contact telephone number. The application will not be processed unlessthis information is provided.9.5.4.5 Applications for salary sacrifice arrangements are processed as they are received, <strong>and</strong>contributions will commence from the first available pay-day. Applications for salarysacrifice arrangements, together with all necessary support documents, must arrive atthe appropriate salaries or payroll unit, as shown on the application form, by 5.00 pm 14calendar days prior to the pay day from which the staff member intends the salarysacrifice arrangement to commence. Applications which are received after that time willnot commence until the following pay day. There will be no retrospective payments <strong>of</strong>salary sacrifice to superannuation.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools Page 9 − 12
