1 GENERAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT1.2.1.6 Averaging <strong>of</strong> Hours1.2.2 MEAL BREAKSThe actual hours worked by school administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff in any week may,by agreement between the principal <strong>and</strong> the staff member, be averaged over periods<strong>of</strong> up to ten weeks between the hours <strong>of</strong> 7.30 am <strong>and</strong> 6.00 pm; provided that the totalhours worked in a ten week period are:• 312 hours 30 minutes for full time staff members working 31 hours 15 minutes perweek; or• 333 hours 20 minutes for full time staff members working 33 hours 20 minutes perweek; or• 362 hours 30 minutes for full time staff members working 36 hours 15 minutes perweek.The pattern <strong>of</strong> hours worked by a staff member under such an arrangement must beapproved by the principal taking into account the needs <strong>of</strong> the school.Averaging arrangements are agreed <strong>and</strong> monitored at the school level. Staff continueto receive their normal pay each fortnight regardless <strong>of</strong> the actual hours worked in thefortnight.This facility provides schools <strong>and</strong> staff with the flexibility to meet changingcircumstances. For example:• A school administrative <strong>of</strong>ficer wishes to work only half a day every second Fridayfor a term <strong>and</strong> the principal agrees. Every second Friday the employee works 3hours 15 minutes. Every other day during the averaging period they work 6 hours35 minutes. Over the 10 week period the ordinary hours <strong>of</strong> duty are maintainedwith 312 hours 30 minutes worked in total.• A school administrative <strong>of</strong>ficer may usually work st<strong>and</strong>ard hours <strong>of</strong> 31 hours 15minutes per week however an unexpected change in workload occurs. Theemployee <strong>and</strong> the Principal may agree that the employee will work more thantheir normal st<strong>and</strong>ard hours in that week with an equivalent amount <strong>of</strong> time taken<strong>of</strong>f in a subsequent week or weeks.School administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff who work four hours or more per day shall be entitled to anunpaid break <strong>of</strong> not less than 30 minutes each day.School administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff who work more than two hours from the commencement <strong>of</strong>the school day shall be entitled to a paid morning tea break <strong>of</strong> 10 minutes each day.To meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the school, the principal may vary the time at which the morning tea break istaken <strong>and</strong> may stagger lunch breaks.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools January 2009 Page 1 - 23
