4 LEAVE4.2.5 PARENTAL LEAVE4.2.5.1 Entitlement <strong>and</strong> paymenta) The paid <strong>and</strong>/or unpaid parental leave entitlements <strong>of</strong> eligible staff members areoutlined in the table below:Staff category Entitlements Service requirements foreligibilityAll permanent <strong>and</strong>temporary staff memberswho become parentsfollowing a birth oradoption but are noteligible for maternity oradoption leave.Basic entitlementUnpaid parental leave – A period<strong>of</strong> up to 52 weeks leave from theactual date <strong>of</strong> birth or custody. Maybe taken as full time <strong>and</strong> or parttime leave providing the totalamount <strong>of</strong> leave does not exceedthe equivalent <strong>of</strong> 12 months fulltime leave.No service requirement.Long term temporary staffmembers may only accesspaid parental leave within aperiod <strong>of</strong> a temporaryengagement.All permanent staffmembers who have beengranted parental leave.All long term temporarystaff members who havebeen granted parentalleave may only access theadditional options during aperiod <strong>of</strong> temporaryengagement.Paid parental leave – One weekfull pay or two weeks half pay.Must be taken in a continuousblock. Cannot be taken asindividual days. Must be takenwithin the first 12 months followingthe date <strong>of</strong> birth or taking custody<strong>of</strong> the child.Paid leave reduces the amount <strong>of</strong>unpaid leave available.Additional entitlementsRight to request additionaloptions:Extend the period <strong>of</strong>unpaid parental leave foran additional period notexceeding 12 months;Return from a period <strong>of</strong>parental leave on a parttime basis until the childreaches school age.At least 40 weeks’ continuousservice prior to the anticipateddate <strong>of</strong> birth or taking custody.No service requirement.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 10
