4 LEAVE4.8 MILITARY LEAVEMilitary leave may be granted to permanent and long term temporary staff members who arevolunteer part time members of the Defence Forces Reserves. Such leave shall not apply toattendance after working hours and shall be subject to Departmental convenience.4.8.1 GENERALSubject to Departmental convenience, the Director-General may grant military leave to staffmembers who are volunteer part time members of the Australian Defence Forces.Such leave is to be granted:a) only when necessary for attendance at training, education, instruction or compulsoryparades;b) only during ordinary working hours; andc) on full pay.The minimal time necessarily spent in travelling to and from an annual training activity may beincluded in leave granted, provided that:a) the time spent travelling is during normal working hours; andb) no pay is received from the Defence Forces for the time spent travelling.4.8.2 ENTITLEMENT4.8.2.1 Maximum Amount of LeaveThe maximum amount of military leave that may be granted in any one financial year(from 1 July to 30 June of the following year) is an aggregate of :a) Naval and Military Reserves - 24 working daysb) Air Force Reserve - 28 working days4.8.2.2 Top Up PayFor leave in excess of the current military leave entitlement as described in section4.8.2.1, staff members will receive top up pay. Top up pay is the difference betweenthe Reservist pay paid by the Commonwealth Department of Defence and what astaff member would ordinarily have received if they were at work.During periods of top up pay, the Government will maintain the staff member’ssuperannuation and the staff member will continue to accrue sick and extendedleave entitlements as well as vacation, stand down or recreation leave (asappropriate).4.8.2.3 Leave for Full Time Military ServiceAt the exhaustion of a staff member’s military leave entitlement outlined in section4.8.2.1, a member of the part time Defence Forces who serves full time will normallyHandbook for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 42
