4 LEAVE4.11.2.4 New Appointeesa) Staff members who are appointed after 1 January <strong>of</strong> a calendar year shall havethe annual grant reduced proportionately in terms <strong>of</strong> the following formula:No. <strong>of</strong> whole months remaining in year x Annual entitlement12 monthsb) Staff members who are appointed after the first day <strong>of</strong> the month will have theirsick leave calculated on the basis <strong>of</strong> complete months <strong>of</strong> service commencingfrom the beginning <strong>of</strong> the month following their date <strong>of</strong> appointment. However,should sick leave become necessary before the expiration <strong>of</strong> the month <strong>of</strong>appointment, sick leave may be granted in advance provided it is supported byacceptable medical certificate(s).4.11.2.5 Temporary Staff MembersThe sick leave entitlement for long term temporary staff members is calculated on thebasis <strong>of</strong> the expected period <strong>of</strong> <strong>employment</strong> using the following formula:Entitlement = Months <strong>of</strong> <strong>employment</strong> x 1512Example: A period <strong>of</strong> four months temporary <strong>employment</strong>.Entitlement = 4 x 15 = 5 days12Note:The provisions <strong>of</strong> Section 4.11.3, Limitations on Entitlement shall apply.If the period <strong>of</strong> temporary <strong>employment</strong> is extended then a further entitlement will becalculated <strong>and</strong> added to any balance from the initial period <strong>of</strong> <strong>employment</strong>.4.11.2.6 Effect <strong>of</strong> Full Time Leave Without PayAccrual <strong>of</strong> sick leave is affected only when the total period <strong>of</strong> leave without pay takenduring a sick leave year is at least a month. When an aggregated period is less thana month, it is to be disregarded.Sick leave without pay does not reduce a staff member’s sick leave entitlement.When staff resign or retire with a negative balance, no recovery action will be taken.4.11.2.7 Special Sick Leavea) ConditionsSpecial sick leave is a grant <strong>of</strong> sick leave additional to the annual or cumulativeentitlement, <strong>and</strong> its application is reserved for occasions <strong>of</strong> long term illness only.Special sick leave may be granted by the Director-General subject to satisfyingthe following criteria:the staff member has ten or more years service;H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 50
