4 LEAVE4.12.6.5 Emergency Service CoursesWhere the Director <strong>of</strong> State Emergency Services considers it essential that a staffmember should attend a course <strong>of</strong> training or lectures, the Director-General shouldmake every effort to release that person from duty. Where the staff member is soreleased the necessary absence from work is regarded as being on duty.The Director <strong>of</strong> the State Emergency Services may nominate staff members forattendance at courses where their attendance is not regarded as essential. In thesecircumstances special leave may be granted for the time staff members arenecessarily absent from duty.A certificate <strong>of</strong> attendance is not necessary. The State Emergency Services willadvise the <strong>Department</strong> whether attendance is required <strong>and</strong> any non-attendance willbe reported to the <strong>Department</strong>.4.12.6.6 Bush Fire Fighting Training CoursesEmergency volunteers nominated to attend courses approved by the Rural FireService, by organisations recognised by the Service, shall be granted the necessaryspecial leave to attend, up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> ten working days in any period <strong>of</strong> twelvemonths.Applications are to be supported by written approval <strong>of</strong> the Rural Fire Service.Approval <strong>of</strong> leave shall be subject to <strong>Department</strong>al convenience <strong>and</strong> writtenconfirmation <strong>of</strong> attendance.4.12.7 ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER STAFF UNDERTAKING TEACHERTRAININGPermanent <strong>and</strong> long term temporary staff members who identify as Aboriginal or Torres StraitIsl<strong>and</strong>er people who are undertaking approved indigenous education studies which articulateinto teacher education studies or approved initial teacher education programs at the University<strong>of</strong> Western Sydney, the University <strong>of</strong> Sydney or the Australian Catholic University, are entitledto special leave to cover:compulsory residential attendance requirements,practicum,graduation ceremonies; <strong>and</strong>time for related essential travel during usual working hours.4.12.8 SPECIAL LEAVE FOR COUNTRY AND RELIEVING STAFF4.12.8.1 Travelling to Another Centre for Medical ExaminationCountry staff required to travel to another centre for medical examination at thedirection <strong>of</strong> the Director-General are to be granted special leave for the time they arenecessarily absent from duty.Where staff are required to travel to another centre for a medical examination forappointment, the relevant travelling <strong>and</strong> sustenance allowance provisions apply.H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 65
