4 LEAVE4.12.6.5 Emergency Service CoursesWhere the Director of State Emergency Services considers it essential that a staffmember should attend a course of training or lectures, the Director-General shouldmake every effort to release that person from duty. Where the staff member is soreleased the necessary absence from work is regarded as being on duty.The Director of the State Emergency Services may nominate staff members forattendance at courses where their attendance is not regarded as essential. In thesecircumstances special leave may be granted for the time staff members arenecessarily absent from duty.A certificate of attendance is not necessary. The State Emergency Services willadvise the Department whether attendance is required and any non-attendance willbe reported to the Department.4.12.6.6 Bush Fire Fighting Training CoursesEmergency volunteers nominated to attend courses approved by the Rural FireService, by organisations recognised by the Service, shall be granted the necessaryspecial leave to attend, up to a maximum of ten working days in any period of twelvemonths.Applications are to be supported by written approval of the Rural Fire Service.Approval of leave shall be subject to Departmental convenience and writtenconfirmation of attendance.4.12.7 ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER STAFF UNDERTAKING TEACHERTRAININGPermanent and long term temporary staff members who identify as Aboriginal or Torres StraitIslander people who are undertaking approved indigenous education studies which articulateinto teacher education studies or approved initial teacher education programs at the Universityof Western Sydney, the University of Sydney or the Australian Catholic University, are entitledto special leave to cover:compulsory residential attendance requirements,practicum,graduation ceremonies; andtime for related essential travel during usual working hours.4.12.8 SPECIAL LEAVE FOR COUNTRY AND RELIEVING STAFF4.12.8.1 Travelling to Another Centre for Medical ExaminationCountry staff required to travel to another centre for medical examination at thedirection of the Director-General are to be granted special leave for the time they arenecessarily absent from duty.Where staff are required to travel to another centre for a medical examination forappointment, the relevant travelling and sustenance allowance provisions apply.Handbook for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 65
4 LEAVE4.12.8.2 Return HomeStaff undertaking duties at a temporary work location may be eligible for additionalspecial leave and allowances as specified in Section 6-19.10 of the PersonnelHandbook.4.12.9 TRANSFERRED EMPLOYEESThe following provisions apply, as appropriate, to staff members who satisfy the definition of“transferred employee” in terms of the Crown Employees (Transferred Employees’Compensation) Award.4.12.9.1 Transferred Employees – Special LeaveA staff member assigned to duty in a new location may be entitled to special leave onthe following basis:a) two days on full pay for the purpose of obtaining accommodation at the newlocation, taken before or after the actual date of transfer;b) two days on full pay for the purpose of preparation and packing of personal andhousehold effects prior to removal or two days for the purpose of arrangingstorage;c) one day for the purpose of either cleaning the residence being vacated or settlingin and occupying the new residence;d) such leave as is necessary, on full pay, to travel to the new location for thepurpose of commencing duty, and/or for the purposes referred to in paragraph(a) above.Where the purposes referred to in paragraphs (a), (b), (c) and (d) above are achievedin a lesser time than those specified, the staff member shall be entitled to leave onfull pay only for that lesser time. Where the purposes referred to cannot be achievedin the time specified the Director-General may grant such extra leave as isconsidered necessary.4.12.9.2 Return Home on WeekendsA transferred employee who has been unable to secure accommodation for family atthe new headquarters shall be entitled to sufficient special leave to permit returninghome on weekends once each month and spend two consecutive days and nightswith family provided suitable arrangements can be made for the performance of thestaff member's duties during absences. The staff member may also be entitled to anadditional day and night in respect of each public holiday occurring in conjunctionwith such weekend and on which the staff member would not normally be rosteredfor duty. Such leave is limited to the time required to travel in each case on the daypreceding and the day following such weekend or long weekend.A transferred employee unable to return home once each month in terms of theforegoing paragraph shall, after four weeks at the new headquarters, be entitled tosufficient leave to allow two consecutive days and nights at a weekend with family.Thereafter such staff member shall be allowed to accumulate special leave at therate of two days per month until sufficient leave is available to allow a return home atHandbook for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 66
