4 LEAVEc) private study for an approved course.3 Study assistance arrangementsWhile study assistance may be granted for any <strong>of</strong> the purposes above, the actualarrangements should be negotiated between the staff member <strong>and</strong> the principal.4.13.2.6 Approved coursesCourses for which study assistance may be granted should meet the followingcriteria:a) Lead to a nationally recognised qualification;b) be able to be taken on a part-time basis;c) be relevant to the SAS staff member’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional development; <strong>and</strong>d) be <strong>of</strong> value to the <strong>Department</strong>.4.13.2.7 More than one course studied at the one timeStudy assistance may be granted for more than one course studied at the sametime, provided that the two courses result in a part-time load <strong>and</strong> the resultingattendance pattern is convenient to the school. Study assistance granted remainsup to three hours per week irrespective <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> courses studied at onetime.4.13.2.8 AccumulationSubject to the convenience <strong>of</strong> the school, or centre, SAS staff may choose toaccumulate part or all <strong>of</strong> their hours <strong>of</strong> study assistance for a particular course toattend compulsory field days or residential schools.4.13.2.9 Making up timeWhere the grant <strong>of</strong> study assistance is insufficient to cover absences to attendcompulsory field days or residential schools, additional time may be granted.Additional time may be made up within normal working hours to a maximum <strong>of</strong>ten days. The time must be made up within the framework <strong>of</strong> Clause 7.4 <strong>of</strong> theCrown Employees (School Administrative <strong>and</strong> Support Staff) Award.The arrangement for making up time must be negotiated with the school. Wheresuch an arrangement is being negotiated, the following factors should beconsidered:a) nature <strong>of</strong> duties;b) needs <strong>of</strong> the workplace;c) whether additional time granted can be made up before the next grant <strong>of</strong>study assistance; <strong>and</strong>H<strong>and</strong>book for non teaching staff in schools 2007 Page 4 - 70
