Projections<br />

Sea surface temperature is projected to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the Baltic Sea <strong>and</strong> other <strong>Europe</strong>an seas<br />

(see Section 4.1.4). As a result, oxygen-depleted areas<br />

will further exp<strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>in</strong> the Baltic Sea,<br />

unless nutrient <strong>in</strong>takes are reduced (Caballero-Alfonso<br />

et al., 2015). The comb<strong>in</strong>ed effects of oxygen loss <strong>and</strong><br />

ocean warm<strong>in</strong>g could force polewards movement<br />

<strong>and</strong> vertical contraction of metabolic viable habitats<br />

<strong>and</strong> species distribution ranges dur<strong>in</strong>g this century<br />

(Deutsch et al., 2015).<br />
