<strong>Climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> <strong>impacts</strong> on environmental systems<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> floods <strong>and</strong> extreme precipitation events<br />

can <strong>in</strong>crease the nutrient load to surface waters<br />

because of <strong>in</strong>creased surface run-off <strong>and</strong> erosion<br />

(Fraser et al., 1999; Battarbee et al., 2008).<br />

<strong>Climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> can enhance harmful algal blooms <strong>in</strong><br />

lakes, both as a direct result of temperature <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

<strong>and</strong> as a result of climate-<strong>in</strong>duced <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> nutrient<br />

concentrations. Increased lake temperature will<br />

generally have a eutrophication-like effect (Sch<strong>in</strong>dler,<br />

2001; Jeppesen, Moss et al., 2010), with enhanced<br />

phytoplankton blooms (Wilhelm <strong>and</strong> Adrian, 2008)<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased dom<strong>in</strong>ance of cyanobacteria <strong>in</strong><br />

phytoplankton (Kosten et al., 2012). These <strong>change</strong>s<br />

may restra<strong>in</strong> the use of lake dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water <strong>and</strong><br />

recreation, <strong>and</strong> they may <strong>in</strong>crease the associated health<br />

risks (Mooij et al., 2005; Jöhnk et al., 2008; Paerl <strong>and</strong><br />

Huisman, 2008) (see also Section 5.2.6).<br />
