5 <strong>Climate</strong> <strong>change</strong> <strong>impacts</strong> on society<br />

Changes <strong>in</strong> climatic conditions <strong>and</strong> their <strong>impacts</strong> on<br />

environmental systems have a wide range of effects<br />

on economic activities <strong>and</strong> on human health <strong>and</strong><br />

well‐be<strong>in</strong>g. This chapter presents selected observed<br />

<strong>and</strong> projected <strong>change</strong>s <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> climate-sensitive<br />

sectors <strong>and</strong> systems. Individual sections discuss the<br />

economic <strong>impacts</strong> of extreme climate <strong>and</strong> weather<br />

events (Section 5.1), the human health <strong>impacts</strong> of<br />

climate <strong>change</strong> <strong>and</strong> climate extremes (Section 5.2)<br />

<strong>and</strong> climate <strong>change</strong> <strong>impacts</strong> on agriculture<br />

(Section 5.3), energy production <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong><br />

(Section 5.4), transport <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>and</strong> operation<br />

(Section 5.5) <strong>and</strong> tourism (Section 5.6). Most of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> Sections 5.1 to 5.4 is primarily based<br />

on <strong>in</strong>dicators, whereas no <strong>in</strong>dicators are available for<br />

Sections 5.5 <strong>and</strong> 5.6.<br />

Information on fisheries is presented as part of<br />

the section on oceans <strong>and</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e ecosystems<br />

(Section 4.1). Information on forests is presented<br />

as part of the section on terrestrial ecosystems<br />

(Section 4.4). Further <strong>in</strong>formation on climate <strong>change</strong><br />

<strong>impacts</strong> <strong>and</strong> risks based on multi-sectoral climate<br />

<strong>change</strong> assessments is available <strong>in</strong> Chapter 6.<br />
