Summary: Ethical norms and behavior In aneconomie experimentThis article investigates the connection between values and behaviorand consists of two parts. First, an investigation of values is madeusing a questionaire. Then an investigation is made regarding thebehavior of.participants in an economic experiment consisting ofthree variations of the ultimatum game. The questionnaireThe inquiry regarding values has two purposes. One is to classifythose questioned into three theoretical groups: integrists, reciprocalsand altruists. Later, a number of behavioral hypotheses for thesegroups are tested in an experiment. The second purpose of theinquiry is to improve the model for the different theoretical groups. The 90 individuals tested were presented with a minimum of 49questions. Most were value statements for which they were asked tonote their level of agreement on a six point scale. Did the valuestatements, expected to be in accordance with each other based onthe theoretical model, also in fact result in strong correlations? Werevalues expected to be opposed to one another also perceived that wayby the test persons? A further ambition in this examination of themodel was to find which questions were most salient indistinguishing between the three different groups.ResultsThe investigation of correlation between different value statementsresulted in 35 significant correlations. All of these correlations werein line with the model. (Questions resulting in significant positivecorrelation were expected in the model to be in accordance, and thosewith significant negative correlations were expected for questionsopposed to one another.)After two thirds of the test persons had been analyzed, one apparentresult was that the three ethical groups were not equidistant.Although test subjects with high eomposite altruist seores wereIV: 5
