Teaching English in the 3rd-Stream Melting Pot

This seminar will provide background and tools for teaching English to remedial learners, most often found
in the 3rd stream. Because differentiated instruction requires differentiated thinking, we will consider a
variety of issues to be found in this particluar "melting pot" such as learning disorders, behavioural
problems, social competence, and cultural and language differences. Good practice guidelines with
concrete teaching strategies will be presented and participants will receive and create sample material
designed for teaching English to remedial learners. We will also examine the difference between poor
performance (leistungsschwach) and learning problems (lernschwach) and find out how we can detect the
difference.
